Label – Naija Ninja Records (2013)

This musician is popularly known for his signature song ‘Mathematics’, the conscious nature of his music, and a music career that spans six different eras (i.e. 6 studio albums). Veteran afro-pop star Naija Ninja ‘Sound Sultan’ has lifted the lid off his sixth LP (titled “Me, My Mouth & Eye”) under his Naija Ninja Records imprint. Sultan tackles issues of politics, love, and destiny on his new lengthy record (20 tracks including 2 bonus tracks).

Hoping to seal the commercial success of the LP and gain acceptance from the new generation of listeners, the Sultan opens the LP by employing a feeble addition from Wizkid and the production of the hotly sought-after Legendury Beatz with the party track ‘Kokoshe’. The fast paced ‘One in a Million’ cannot be overlooked, its high points is when Sound Sultan sings the chorus and modulates it for the second time. Another party track on the album that’s of note is one of the project’s lead singles; talking about the dancehall inspired ‘Gud Gal’ produced by Jay Sleek. Regardless of the fact that the party starter about a good girl falling for a bad boy did not enjoy a long stay on dance-floors and charts (due to poor promotion); it is one of the album firm points, Fasasi rides in on the thumping beats like a true ragga star.

The major problem with this album is the arrangement; unnecessary remixes and track listing. After the second track which is the stellar ‘Natural Something’, the remix to ‘Luv Language’ featuring Duncan Mighty comes up and the original song is listed as the eight track the same thing close re-occurs with ‘Kuru Komaga’ whose remix features indigenous rapper Reminisce. Furthermore the award-winning and battered remix of ‘Orobo’ which featured Flavour should have been kept off this project entirely, but sadly it lies in the first 15 minutes of “Me, My Mouth & Eye”.

Fellow Ninjas, YoungGreyC, Blackha & Karma surface on ‘Lagbo Lagbo’ and bonus track ‘Gbedu’. On the latter YoungGreyC (popularly referred to as the pink ninja, and is responsible for all the mind-blowing background on the album tracks) steals the show with her opening intro and solid chorus proving she is undeniably the label’s best kept secret. Blackcha & Karma also rise up to the occasion, altogether serving a steamy club anthem unlike like the former which comes off as a bit noisy and extremely lacking chemistry.

Matters of the heart are addressed on the poppy number ‘One’ (bonus track) which features 2face, ‘Like Mi’ and ‘Follow Me Go’ follow in the same vein and notably so when he recruits former Ninja Sean Tizzle to help him hit the nail on ‘Follow Me Go’. On the Kid Konnect simple afro-pop mid-tempo beat, Lanre and Sean rock together blending the art of rapping and singing about a girl they went to follow them to delivering a moody romantic number.

The mood is not always festive as the Baba Dee assisted political yet groovy ‘Temporary Turn Permanent’, ‘All Way Na Way’, ‘Africa’, ‘Still I Rise’ and ‘People Bad’ which features Wyclef Jean, Ikechukwu and 2face respectively, not-forgetting ‘The Piano’ are housed in the album. Preaching the gospel of fighting for your own bread coupled with a celebratory chorus, drums, strings and timbres, ‘All Way Na Way’ hits the bull’s eye whereas ‘Still I Rise’ comfortably floats in-between greatness and failure. ‘The Piano’ is driven by a piano officially closing album on a spiritual note as Sound Sultan acknowledges and is thankful the presence of a supreme being in his life and career over rolling drums, singing “You can have this as your ringtone/ Or as your favourite song/ You can call me the piano/ But he is the one really that plays the song/ Cause he is my inspiration/ Beyond imagination/ I thank him every season…”.

“Me, My Mouth & Eye” is what the career doctor prescribed; definitely the project will not break new grounds for the sultan of sound, it might even be regarded as a little dated for 2013’s radio, still it showcases the signature style of Sound Sultan and will help him introduce his music to a young generation. Judging from the couple of records we have consumed from the host, this particular one extensively highlights and showcases the vocal abilities of Olanrewaju Fasasi.

Album Review: Burna Boy – L.I.F.E

Album Review: Burna Boy – L.I.F.E

L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity)
BURNA BOY

RECORD LABEL: Aristokrat Records
YEAR: 2013

When an artiste consistently drops three hit singles back to back, his forthcoming album becomes the most anticipated album of the year. The suspense for the release of this album was over on the 10th of august 2013 when Burnaboy officially released his debut album. Though he had earlier released other LP’s in form of mixtapes, L.I.F.E is Burna boy’s debut Album. L.I.F.E is an acronym for ‘Leaving an Impact for Eternity‘.

Damini Ogulu is a Rivers State born artiste who has been influenced by different genres of music ranging from Jazz, 90’s R&B, Afrobeat, Dance hall and reggae. The album cover depicts little Burna Boy holding a microphone with background images of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Akinulapo-Kuti, Reggae icon Bob Marley as well as Juju legend King Sunny Ade and veteran Jamaican singer Sizzla Kalonji. This album art cover summarizes the style of the album which is a baby of the fusion of Jazz, reggae, dance-hall and afrobeat.

Track Review

1. There was no better way to kick start the album than an introduction by burna boy’s Grandad, Benson Idonije who was the late Fela’s first manager. Music seems to be a Legacy in the Ogulu family.

2. No No No
“ No think say because I dey blow grammar, I no be Ahaoda boy” On this track he tries to correct the misconceptions about him and clears the air about his roots. Burna also states that he comes from the streets and this song does well for his core fans repping him from PH.

3. Say So

“This one no be party na rave, you have every right to misbehave, you fit behave the way you like to behave. If anybody ask you tell them Burna boy say so.” A groovy party like jam with saxophone by Josiah Baguda. He calls out his crew Leriq, Pucado, Peedi Picass and Gambo.

4. Abeg Abeg (Remix) feat Tuface & Timaya

A conscious party Jam featuring Tubaba and Timaya though tuface tries to own the song by serenading it with his vocals and phrases form his mother tongue, Burnaboy sounded confident while Timaya fell short in both lyrics and vocals.

5. Roses (Na so e suppose be)

This is a typical Leriq production. Dancehall mixed with 90’s R&B. The lyrics preaches love and happiness.

6. Run my race
A fusion of Afrobeat & hiphop without a saxophone. The track parades a heavy beat and is already enjoying massive airplay in clubs, parties and radio nationwide. It emphasizes that he has not had it easy and he now enjoys the fruit of his hardwork.

7. Boom Boom Boom
With snippets from Fela’s song, Boom Boom Boom is a pulsating upbeat with a blend of dancehall and Naija hip-hop. Burnaboy proclaims himself as a ladies man who is not a gentleman especially in close doors. A groovy song too.

8. Yawa Dey.
Here Burnaboy proves that his style is very dynamic and unpredictable. It is true talent for a botty artist to venture into creating kpalangolo music a.k.a ajegunle music and come out with a street tune. The lyrics explains it all: “ You never see Landlord, Yawa dey! This song is fit for galala and Suo dance steps. Daddy Showkey will be proud of this one.

9. Ma loada Ma motto
This is probably the weakest song on this album. It starts with a snippet from Fela though upbeat and funky.

10. Tonight
Another radio hit with a smoothjazzylow tempo feel. Switching from Igbo to Yoruba lyrics and still deliveringon point. This song proves that there is no certain way to make a naija hit song.
11. Like to Party
This is the first single to hit airwaves, this track alone pummeled Burna Boy to the limelight. A certified harmonious 90’s r&b inspired melody. This track will rejuvenate any tired leg on a dance floor.

12. Smooth Sailing

It’s the kind of music you listen to on your way back from the club or work. You are not necessarily interested in the lyrics, what matters is that you get home safe. Song Produced by Leriq

13. Don’t Run feat Reminisce & Olamide
A song with Olamide and Reminisce is definitely a battle ground to determine the best in Yoruba hip-hop artiste. Though the verses were short we will let you be the judge here. Resonating vibe for Yoruba hip hop heads.

14. Jah’s Love is True ft Wizkid
At this point you start to think the album will get boring but Wizzy does what he knows how to do best which are catchy hooks. A very Energetic giddy sound by Leriq emphasizes the fact that both musicians are here to stay. They address critics who now salute them after calling them such names as mixtape wonder. They re-iterate that its Jah’s Love for them that made them who they are.

15. Outro: Remember Me

Very stimulating beat, a good way to end this excellent album. Oluwa Burna as he is fondly called by fans mentions his roots where he was raised which is PH city. His top notch vocals are well rendered on this track.

Burna boy is a multi-talented musician with a unique sound and he is ever willing to take risks. This was made obvious in the L.I.F.E project. Though this album was solely produced by aristocrat record’s official producer Leriq (call the paramedics) the album never became monotonous. This project is in an extraordinary class of its own. Creativity cannot be measured on a mainstream scale. If you are looking for an album to cop this summer, you cant go wrong with this album.

Rating: 8.5/10

It will come as shock to many viewers in West Africa who felt Melvin, Beverly & Elikem had a great shot of claiming the grand prize. Beverly had made a huge name for herself for the viewers as her steamy relationship with South Africa’s Angelo gathered a lot of attention across the continent as well as hate.

In the final minutes, Beverly was the first to get evicted, followed by Melvin, then Elikem and to the surprise of many, Cleo & Dilish were shocked to be in the final 2. The two Nigerians received the lowest votes after an intense round of voting.

In the final moment, Cleo was announced as evicted and automatically, Dilish became the winner of the 8th edition Big Brother Africa.

Congrats to Dilish Matthews & congrats to Namibia.

Why Do Nigerians Hate The Truth? Eedris Abdulkareem & The Nigerian Music Industry.

Why Do Nigerians Hate The Truth? Eedris Abdulkareem & The Nigerian Music Industry.

I will make my words brief and straight to the points. My name is Gbemisola Adesuwa Abayomi, I am a Nigerian, based in the UK. Studied Music Business 101 at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA. I work with MTV Hits UK. I felt so bad reading comments from my fellow Nigerian music fans that seems blinded to the truth about what hip hop is. I promised myself to take time to share my view and concerns regarding the issues of diss in Eedris Abdulkareem new song “I GO WOOZ” . It’s a pity that at this stage where our music industry in Nigeria is, many still don’t know what good music or hip hop is all about. Reading comments from music fans raining abusive words on Eedris Abdulkareem, I felt so bad because Don Jazzy handle the issue with maturity he knew he was wrong with the words he said about rappers. First let me handle the issue of fans. Many fans play down the song “I GO WOOZ” making comments like “rubbish, wetin he dey say”. .. The Eedris many ignorant music fans diss over the “I GO WOOZ” song brought many attentions to Naija music in d days of Remedies. What I expected people to comments on in the song was not addressed at all.
The main diss in the song was the COSON lines and I think that ought to have been a food for thought. The Don Jazzy lines are just warning and nothing like a diss. Its good music and the fact that it’s been a long time we’ve heard from Eedris Abdulkareem and for him to release such a nice hip hop sound we ought to appreciate him.
Maybe the issue with Eedris Abdulkareem is like the biblical saying that prophets are not respected at home. He has always had enemies, even some of my friends here in the UK are not liking him but for this new song “I GO WOOZ”; they are loving him more because it’s now clear that Eedris Abdulkareem maybe a rebel in many people’s face but truth be told he is a rare gem and hip hop music pioneer that need to be respected and appreciated for so many reasons in Nigeria and by all Nigerian worldwide.
Let’s play the tape back from the very start till now. If not for their revolution as the Remedies coming to our TV screen then on the then AIT JAMZ show with “Shakomo” ; no TV or Radio stations give a dawn about Nigerian hip hop music. A revolution which I believe Eedris Abdulkareem started.

People criticized him for the song “Jagajaga”, but truth be told you and I dance to it and the words are truth. With music you have freedom of speech. He later became the friend of the then president after the song Saga even with the whole issue of ban on him. Some even called him wack, but we all danced to all the wack songs then. One of my greatest disappointments in this whole hating against Eedris Abdulkareem was that of Freeze of Cool FM when he talks down Eedris Abdulkareem. He said and I quote: “Who is Eedris Abdulkareem? Is he a celeb? Because I only deal with celebrities and superstars”.
I read a write up from Tosin Adeda on disrespecting pioneer of music in Nigeria. Well, Eedris had always had issues with some ignorant fans and bad music heads in Nigeria. We need to stand up and be mature.
The same Eedris that stood toe to toe against 50 cent and Nigerian Brewery on the treatment of Nigerian artistes which many top Nigerian artistes are reaping the benefits of the brawl today. Before the Eedris and 50 Cents, the question is how much do they pay our top artistes? The Eedris we criticize now put his career down for this industry to be what it is but nobody recognizes the fact but think Eedris is a fool.
For those calling Eedris Abdulkareem names like wack etc… my question is how do hip hop music started in Nigeria? We’ve moved from era to era and our music is getting mature by the day and on the world stage now. Don Jazzy and Dbanj started with “Koko”, can that play well today if we are to compare the past music sound to that of today? Quoting one of the responses to Freeze diss by a concern fan… (The fall of Eedris was the fight with 50 cent and the fight was to make sure that A- list musicians in Nigeria should be treated with respect and not put in economy class while guest stars are flown in private jets or first class. Back then, promoters will make an A- list musician come in a car and paid pennies while they spend so much for foreign stars. The millions they collect today were a result of the fight, the first class they fly today was as a result of the fight. Freeze has no right to take shots at Eedris but show respect.)
I was disappointed that many rappers and those who claims to be hip hop heads could not stand up for a fight about what Don Jazzy said to rappers and left Eedris Abdulkareem to fight alone again. A dj friend in Nigeria told me, many rappers had turned to singers in Nigeria now.
This means it’s a one direction thing and reasons why all we hear every day is all about ladies, sex appeals, money and no message or reality. Let me rest my words for another day. I have issues with brands in Nigeria and the whole brand ambassadorship in Nigeria. Most of these endorsement deals are just waste of resources. They keep endorsing people with no vision and purpose instead of investing the cash in supporting good and innovative projects that will move the industry and country ahead. That’s a topic for another day.

Not Targeted At Single Girls? Stella Damasus Is Back Again! This Time She Advices Women On How To Keep Their Men

Read Nigerian actress, Stella Damasus relationship article on how women can keep their men. This article is fully packaged and Yeah loaded with… 😉 Read and enjoy!

Written by Stella Damasus

Hello ladies,

Been a while since you read from me and I am sorry about that. However I never said I would be the only one writing for this blog. I threw it open to members to send in their articles, concerns, challenges, questions and other things to the Adiva email address and we will publish it.

Not only that, we will get the experts/professionals to help answer some of your questions, I am still waiting to hear from you all.

Anyway I have good news and that is the fact that you will be able to watch me talk more/elaborate on things I will write in the blog. Yes o my YouTube channel will be very very active soon with my new project called Stella’s diaries.

You all need to look out for it because it will be very exciting as usual. I will say it the way I see it and I am sure by now most of you know I am not ashamed or afraid to speak my mind.

Anyway let me go to the topic I want to discuss today “keeping your man”.This is for the married women o please this is not targeted at single girls.

Now we know that the one thing men cannot live without apart from money is SEX. In this forum I really don’t care where anyone is from or what religion you belong to, I will be as raw and honest as possible.

I do not understand why women especially Africans do not talk about sex when we know that it is the one thing we do regularly with so much pleasure.

Anyway our men love sex to the max and we know that for a fact. So how come when we are dating them we are so willing to give them what they want even though we know it is wrong. The first few years of marriage is filled with sex almost five times a day in different parts of the house and at odd hours, but after the few years we start to back down, we start to make excuses, we start to see it as a chore and then we let them know that we are really not interested in them physically.

Wow, what happened to the lady fox, the hot chic, the sexy cat that he got married to?
What happened to the babe that would understand the signal he would give and immediately comply?
What happened those times when he would race home to his sexy energetic ever ready wife who would make him feel wanted?
I know that most of you will say “I have kids who wear me out, I have work that drains me, I got older, my sex drive has gone under, I have a headache” to the point that the man will need to get a visa at your “embassy” to visit his favorite
When you do this to him, how do you expect him to come home everyday to look at your tired, grumpy and unfriendly face?

How would you expect him to come home to you complaining about the plumber, your child that was being rude, and your boss that gave you a hard time?
NOOOOOOO please.

At that point he wants you to take him to that special place were the sky is so wonderful and turn his brain around to the point that all you say will sound like sweet music to his ears.
These men are human beings who go through their own challenges, half of which you don’t even know because they are trying to save you from all the stress.

What annoys me the most is when we women start to complain and nag about the men not having time for us, and how they no longer find us attractive anymore and that’s where the suspicion starts. That’s when the saying comes, “if he is not getting it from me someone else must be giving it to him’.

I don’t encourage cheating at all in fact it goes against what the bible teaches no matter what. I will not also judge anyone who has been caught in a web he is not proud of for one reason or the other. I believe that if we are truly sorry for our sins and we go to God with the determination not to sin again, he is merciful and will forgive us.

In all of this I know that all men are not beasts, neither are they evil because we married them. I also know that men do not get married and carry it at the back of their minds that they must cheat. That’s not how it works please. There are things that we do that trigger things in their brains and these things drive them to do things that they really would not have done. Most of us believe it when they say men don’t think with their brains but they think with their penis. I beg to differ because they know what they are doing and I don’t see how the penis can have a brain that will control the whole body. There is always something that sparks off in the brain that sends the signal to the penis.
You may or may not agree with me but this is what I choose to believe. Most men we married are not so evil and dubious, some may be cowards but cast your mind back to the kind of man you chose to marry and see if there were traces of that character or not.

What men want:
– They want to feel like they are in control of things which is not bad because they are the head.
– They want to feel loved and like it or not they are our first babies who desire words of affirmation no matter how macho they seem.
– They want to feel WANTED all the time, it gives them the confidence that all men crave for.
– They want to know you are still sexually attracted to them.
– They don’t want you to make it obvious that you are smatter even if you are.
– They like their space and alone time.
– They don’t want to come home to a fat mama who is the opposite of the sexy curvy woman he fell in love with, because she let herself go after they got married. Why should she try and look the same? She is married now, who else does she have to impress? WRONG! Men are first of all moved by what they see before anything else. So when they can’t see that anymore or at least an effort to getting back that body that turned them on, they’ll probably lose interest in you and find it someone else.
– They don’t want to come and hug you after work with you are smelling of onions and oil. At least take a shower before he gets there or if there is no time spray perfume.
– They want to come home to a nice smelling neat and tidy home.
– They want to walk into the bedroom with the bed all made up and clothes arranged. Maybe a small note on his pillow saying I love you and I am glad you are home, that definitely puts an automatic smile on his face even if for three seconds, it keeps him interested in you
– They want you to be a good listener not just a talker.
– They want to know that you believe in them and you are proud of them.
– They want to know that no matter what you will have their back and support them, then ask questions later.
– They just want to see that you are making an effort because no human should expect you to be perfect.
– They don’t want another mother but they want you to take care of them the way you would your kids.
– They want a wife, girlfriend, sorry to say (personal call girl) which is not a bad thing because he is your husband who is free to express his sexual desires as long as they are not life threatening or demeaning.

There are so many things I can add and you will not stop reading so let me end this by saying: if you do not try to do at least 60 percent of this regularly, trust me a younger version of you will cross his path and that is exactly how the enemy works. When that younger and more energetic version of you catches his eye, your matter will quietly end. This girl will rock his world so bad that coming home to you will become a chore. These girls can give him all these things and even more that the men find it so difficult to resist. All the money that was supposed to go to you and your children will find their way to her pocket. They can get anything they want from your man because they know the secret to getting and keeping him.

I know that this article will cause a lot of controversial wahala but it is fine because in life people don’t like to hear the truth. This might also be an opportunity for people to make silly comments but the truth is I am loving it all. I finally have the attention of people who will ordinarily not want to listen to me or watch me.

Ladies on a more serious note, if you are guilty of these crimes and are depriving your husband of what is rightfully his then don’t be shocked when a younger version of you gets the best of him.
I will let you all know when the extended version of this topic will be on my YouTube channel. God will bless your homes and give you the wisdom you need to keep it together.

Think about this objectively, try out what you agree with and discard what you don’t. Leave the messenger out of it for a change and see the bigger picture ahead.

Take care of yourselves and remember that I love you all.

BBA Update: Nigerian Housemates Beverly & Melvin Make Top 5 For Big Brother Africa The Chase | Angelo & Bimp Evicted

We’re down to the wire now as we can officially announced the top 5 for Big Brother Africa The Chase. Nigerian housemates Melvin & Beverly make to final top 5 along with Cleo, Dillish & Elikem.

Housemates Angelo and Bimp were evicted today, and that brought a lot of tears to the other housemates especially, Beverly who had been in a hot and steamy relationship with the South African.

It’s down to the Top 5 now, and Team Nigeria is looking very good as only Melvin has been nominated once, and Beverly has skated through with being nominated once. It’s looking like at least one Nigeria will win this year grand prize of $200,000.00

Here are a few facts about the remaining 5 housemates via BigBrother Africa.

Image

Originally a Ruby, Beverly is probably the luckiest of the pack having gone through the entire Season without facing the dreaded Eviction dagger. It’s safe to say that the Nigerian lass literally walked her way to the Finale. On love, she had a bad experience very early in the game when Uganda’s LK4 tried two-timing her with South Africa’s Koketso. Seeing the Ugandan choose Koketso over her must have been a huge blow but she soldiered on, thanks to being Swapped to the Diamond House. No one wanted to believe that Betty’s Bolt had his eyes fixed on Beverly but that was her story and she stuck to it. It was only after Bolt moved to the Ruby House that he started confessing to a few transgressions. Beverly won HoH twice during the Season.

Image

Hakeem’s sweetheart or Mrs Mandaza as she became fondly known on the Big Brother Africa Twitter streets, Cleo surprised many when she pulled herself together and continued with The Chase even after her beau was booted out. Having survived four Evictions, the Zambian emcee has proved to be quite a strong contender in the game. Though this original Ruby couldn’t quite crack winning Head of House, she really pulled her weight and was always so close.

Image

The last confirmed Finalist, Diamond Dillish must still be pinching herself after surviving the last Eviction that saw South Africa’s Angelo and Ethiopian Bimp bite the dust. The princess, as Pebbles calls her, is another one that became a regular under the guillotine but Africa would not hear any of it and she was Saved on all occasions. Though she managed to go through the entire Season without falling for any of the guys, Dillish occasionally spoke about yearning for some good loving. Sadly, the Namibian princess failed dismally to make Head of House.

Image

Elikem:

‘That nigga Elikem’, as his beau the gorgeous Pokello refers to him, became the first confirmed Finalist of The Chase. The Ghanaian Chasemate fought quite a few battles to make it to the finish line in one piece. Having been the target of serious frenemy squabbles, it took Elikem a while to wake up and smell the coffee. The Taylor was quite popular with the ladies before settling with Zimbabwe’s Pokello and the ladies had to take a chill pill. A man of firsts, Elikem is also the only Chasemate to have had the nerve to Nominate his love-interest when he put up Pokello. He is also the first Ghanaian to make it to the Finale. This original Diamond became Head of House three times and survived five Evictions; twice by Africa and three times by the respective HoH.

Image

Melvin:

The only Chasemate to have tested fate and put his own head on the chopping block during his tenure as Head of House, a move that will go down as one of the boldest of the Season. Perhaps that’s the reason why his fellow Housemates could not Nominate him ever again, they were still picking up their jaws from the floor. The Nigerian hottie almost wears a permanent smile and never bothers anyone. That’s why it was quite a spectacle when Dillish rubbed him the wrong way this week, making him very angry. Though he only faced Eviction once, by his own doing anyway, Melvin won Head of House three times during his days as a Diamond. This actually made it hard to recall that Melvin is actually an original Ruby.
